1. Commercial Benefits and Advantages:
Linux and several thousands of free/open source software are generally released under
Free or Public License like GPL (General Public License) which allows unrestricted use
of such software in all domains including Education, Business and Govt. Organizations.
The GPL license permits the use of open source software in unlimited number of
computers in the academic campus and thereby helping the institutions to bring down
the software licensing costs spent on proprietary software products developed by large
software corporations.
By adopting open source software for educational use, the institutions need not worry
about license expiry which is the case with any proprietary software. Open source
software does not expire and its continuous development is supported and backed by
the large open source community.
The institution may need to spend only a small amount of money for getting any external
support/services from a open source company who can help in successfully migrating
from proprietary windows platform to open source based Linux platform.
